Introduction
By John Costanzo

The industrial revolution was a period in which the world began to industrialize beginning with Britain. Many new jobs opened and caused a surplus of workers to flock into the cities which offered the people jobs, food, and clothing. Because of the industrial revolution, power shifted from the dieing noble class to the wealthy factory owners of the middle class. Many of the job-seekers were farmers who were too poor to bring their farms up to code or who were simply looking for opportunity. However, the multitude of people swarming into the cities caused overcrowding and caused living conditions to diminish.

Cities were seriously lacking in police protection and sanitary codes, allowing garbage and other filth to pile into the streets. Whether at work or at home, both conditions were abominable. Long hours and dangerous conditions often led shorter life spans.
